New stackable shell chair made of 100% waste materials

Mater’s new stackable chair designed by Space Copenhagen is made from waste in a new groundbreaking technology, patented by Mater and called Mater Circular Material. Easily integrated into various kinds of spaces and interiors, the chair’s design focuses on comfort and functionality combined with industrial and sculptural features.

The dynamic design duo behind Space Copenhagen, Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, have introduced their first stacking chair, Eternity. The chair’s primary inspiration was waste materials.

“We’re incredibly proud to take part in this exciting new process and technology – and also to finally to present a stacking chair that is also circular. The foundation of our design is the material’s inspiring organic and tactile nature. The name Eternity speaks to Mater’s circular approach, but also reflects the idea that the chair can be stacked sky-high, at least theoretically,” explain Bindslev Henriksen and Bundgaard Rützou, Space Copenhagen.

As the first circular shell chair produced by Mater, the Eternity chair marks a new beginning and endless possibilities for the company. Mater’s patented technology means that moulding Mater Circular Material into larger pieces is now possible.

“The ability to produce this complicated shell is a technological milestone for us that will allow us to launch future design classics in our new Mater Circular Material,” enthuses Mater founder and Head of Circular Transformation, Henrik Marstrand, continuing:

“We’re incredibly excited to expand our collaboration with Space Copenhagen and to welcome Eternity as part of our circular furniture collection. Mater Circular Material complies with all durability tests on the market, making it a perfect match for stackable shell chairs.”

Launching Mater Circular Material: A circular waste composite material

The shell of the Eternity chair is made from upcycled fibre-based waste materials from Danish coffee producer BKI Kaffe and plastic waste from Grohe. In other words: Mater Circular Material.

Mater developed this innovative technology for mixing various waste streams to allow them to mould many kinds of furniture. The technique allows efficient upcycling of industrial waste while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions, instead of the waste being burned.

“Furniture manufactured using Mater Circular Material offers a new look and tactile experience out of the ordinary. Once moulded, unlike any other material on the market, it has its own distinctive history and organic structure, providing almost unlimited options for the finished material,” explains Marstrand.

Designed for disassembly

The Eternity chair is designed for disassembly, which means that each component, in its purest form, can be upcycled into new production cycles.

The new composite material is designed to be reprocessed again and again, which is why Mater has a circular take-back system. Anything made with Mater Circular Material can be recycled and made into new furniture up to five times.

“As furniture manufacturers we see it as our responsibility to take back our furniture when people don’t want it anymore, for any reason. So, at the end of one life, we offer to take it back to reprocess it to be sent back to the market as new furniture” clarifies Marstrand.
