About Mater

Since its founding in Copenhagen in 2006, Mater has been challenging how furniture is made.

We develop production methods that turn discarded resources into furniture, working with established and emerging designers to create pieces designed for long-term use.

Our materials and production methods include recycled aluminium, recycled plastic and waste-based materials such as coffee shells and sawdust.

We continue to explore new waste streams and production techniques that can reduce the need for virgin resources.

Our journey with waste materials

  • Mater Logo

Founded by Henrik Marstrand with an ambition to inspire the global design audience and engage people in new ways of using materials.

  • FSC Wood

We have used FSC®-certified wood in selected products since the beginning. FSC® certification is based on standards for forest management, biodiversity and workers' rights.

  • Mater Highstool

Mater High Stool is launched. Today it's one of our most sold products and is a centerpiece in many hotels, bars and restaurants around the world. It's regarded as a New Danish Classic.

  • Aluminum Scraps

Launch of the Mater High Stool in recycled aluminum. 70% of the aluminum comes from recycled old pipes, tubing and other aluminum waste melted and mixed with new material to obtain the silvery expression.

  • MangoWood Table

We introduce the Bowl Table made of mango wood. Mango wood is a byproduct of an already thriving industry. When the trees stop bearing fruits, it's cut down, and a new one is planted. We harvest this wood that was previously burnt or left to break down in our Bowl Table.

  • Ocean waste

We begin using plastic from discarded fishing nets in selected pieces in the Ocean Collection. The nets are collected, washed, shredded and made into recycled plastic pellets.

  • Ocean Chair

The Ocean collection by Nanna Ditzel is awarded with the Wallpaper* Magazines Design award.

  • Matek

In alliance with large corporations, Mater explores new technology that recycles industrial fibre and plastic waste. This results in five material blends under the name Matek®.

  • Tree

The Ocean Collection is launched in a version of recycled beer kegs from Carlsberg. The OC2 Collection can be found in the outdoor area of Carlsberg's headquarters in Copenhagen.

  • Mater Takeback

Introducing our Mater Takeback system. Furniture made with Matek® can be returned through the system, arranged case by case, for recycling into new furniture.

  • Metal Waste

We incorporated post-consumer e-waste in our Matek® production.

  • Biodegradeable waste

Launch of our biodegradable Matek™ variant. Using bio-based PLA combined with natural fibres, the resulting Matek™ is biodegradable in industrial composting facilities inline with ISO14855 standards (certified ultimate aerobic biodegradation).

  • Matek Pendant Lamps

Our first lighting collection crafted from Matek®. Until now, Matek® has mainly been used for chair seats and tabletop surfaces, and developing the technology for smaller, more intricate components took time and testing. It marks a new chapter in our ambition to transform waste materials into design furniture.

  • Matek Tabletop

The introduction of a new generation of Matek® applications through the launch of larger-format tabletops. For the first time, Matek® is produced in significantly larger dimensions, opening new possibilities for workspace design and architectural applications.
