Celebrating a Classic

This autumn marks the 15th anniversary of The High Stool – Aluminum edition. The original wooden version, designed by Space Copenhagen, has become a new Danish classic and is widely known around the world. But the lesser-known aluminum version has an interesting craft and sustainability story to tell.

Seventy percent of the aluminum used for the high stool comes from recycled old pipes, tubing, and other aluminum waste. The aluminum scraps are melted and mixed with thirty percent new material to obtain a clear silvery expression. The High Stools are handcrafted in India by skilled craftspeople who practice the ancient technique of sand casting. Sand casting is a traditional metal casting process characterized by the use of sand as the moulding form. Hard-packed sand is sculpted around a model. When the model is removed, it creates a hollow form that can be filled with melted aluminum.

In this way, discarded metal scraps can be transformed into extraordinarily design pieces. With its luminous expression, the High Stool – Aluminum edition, is bound to add a little edge to any interior environment.

High Stool Collection

The High Stool is designed by Space Copenhagen and is regarded as a New Danish Classic, with its iconic organic yet minimalist style. The High Stool Collection is available in three heights 47 cm, 69 cm and 74 cm, suitable for both residential and commercial use. The collection comes with various finishes and leather types in either FSC® certified wood or recycled aluminum.

Made of FSC-certified wood or recycled aluminum

The High Stool collection is made from FSC® certified wood like every wooden product in the Mater collection. A FSC® certification means that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests, where harvesting trees is limited to what the forests can reproduce, avoiding the exploitation of nature.

The High Stool collection is also available in recycled aluminum variants. These are sand- casted from 70 % recycled, aluminum scrap, like old car components and bicycle wheels. The aluminum products are handcrafted by skilled craftspeople who are practicing the ancient technique of sand casting.
