Earth Stool Backrest | Coffee Waste Light | 69 cm | by Eva Harlou
€475,00 EUR
Earth Stool is a circular bar stool designed by Danish architect Eva Harlou. Earth Stool is the result of a new innovative waste-to-value technique that enables Mater to reuse companies’ industrial waste, e.g. plastic waste and other fibre-based materials.
The seats are made from recycled plastic waste and coffee shell waste from BKI coffee. The technique is developed in collaboration with Danish Technological Institute with support from the University of Copenhagen. The waste materials are mixed in a unique compound suitable for press moulding – a method designed to reuse companies’ resources more efficiently. Earth Stool represents classic Scandinavian design with steel frames that make the bar stool elegant and timeless.
The new ground-breaking production technique allows Mater to reuse waste materials and turn it into useful and unique design solutions. Created to support a circular design thinking and the UN SDGs: “Responsible Consumption and Production” (SDGs 12), “Climate Action” (SDGs 13) and “Partnership for the Goals” (SDGs 17).

Sustainability ⌵
One Earth Stool Backrest contains 1590g waste materials
Cutting-edge technology allows Mater to make furniture from waste materials in their patented Matek® material by combining fibre with a binder. The Matek® is made by mixing e-waste with either coffee waste from Danish coffee producer BKI Kaffe or wood waste.
E-waste is a growing environmental concern across the globe due to the world’s use and throwaway
culture. Only 17.4% of total global e-waste is known to have been collected and properly recycled. This figure has dropped over the last five years as a percentage of total waste generated.

Care and maintenance ⌵
Matek™
The Matek™ material is made from a mix of recycled fibre and plastic waste. It offers a strong, durable surface that is easy to clean and requires very little maintenance.
For daily care, it is recommended to dust the surface with a soft cloth. The surface can be cleaned with a soft cloth wrung out in a mild solution of lukewarm water and a universal cleaning detergent. Avoid using abrasive cleaning agents and harsh detergents, as these may damage the surface.
Avoid placing Matek™ furniture in direct sunlight, excessive heat, or humidity over longer periods of time, as this can affect the appearance of the material. For tabletops, we always recommend using trivets under hot objects, such as coffee pots and cups, to prevent damage to the surface.
As Matek™ furniture is made from a blend of natural
materials, each piece is unique, and its appearance may vary from item to item. A slight change in colour over the years is also to be expected.
Matek™ furniture also has a distinct smell when first
unpacked, but this will fade after a few days of use.
Stainless steel
Dust stainless steel products daily using only a soft, dry cloth. Clean stainless steel surfaces only with a detergent specifically designed for stainless steel.
Cleaning agents not specifically developed for stainless steel may permanently damage the surface and should always be avoided.
